The Olympic Vocabulary Relay
What you’ll need:
- Index cards
- Pens
- Small prizes (optional)
How to play:
- Create the cards: Write different Olympic sports (swimming, gymnastics, track and field, etc.) in Spanish on separate index cards. On the back of each card, write the English translation.
- Divide and conquer: Divide the cards into two piles. One pile will be the “Spanish” pile and the other the “English” pile.
- Set up the course: Create a starting line and a finish line. Place the “Spanish” cards face up at the starting line and the “English” cards face down at the finish line.
- Explain the game: Explain to your child that they will be running a relay race to translate Olympic sports from Spanish to English.
- Start the race: The child starts at the starting line, reads the Spanish word on the top card, runs to the finish line, finds the matching English card, and brings it back to the starting line.
- Keep going: Continue until all cards have been matched.
Tips for extra fun:
- Time the game: For added excitement, time how long it takes your child to complete the relay.
- Make it competitive: If you have multiple children, turn it into a friendly competition.
- Expand the vocabulary: As your child gets better, add more challenging sports or other Olympic-related words.
- Use props: For added immersion, consider using small props or toys related to the different sports.
By making learning Spanish fun and interactive, you’ll be surprised at how quickly your child picks up new vocabulary. ¡Buen trabajo! (Good job!)
